Moratorium in NJ

Death Penalty Put On Hold For A Year In New Jersey: “Plastic::Politics::Death: Ah, exploring the irony in a moratorium on the death penalty…”

(Via Plastic.)

You gotta love Plastic synopses. As I posted a few days ago, this is very encouraging. Together with moves in Illinois and Maryland (although Maryland has since lifted theirs), I hope this is the beginning of the end for capital punishment in this country.

I’m somewhat disappointed in the results of the Coleman case in Virginia:

DNA tests confirm Coleman’s guilt: “DNA tests have confirmed the guilt of Roger Keith Coleman, whose dying claim of innocence had lived on since his 1992 execution.”

(Via Roanoke.com.)

It’s really too bad. America is primed to accept a case like this to force a broad change in public opinion against the death penalty. Years of CSI and general awareness of DNA evidence have established an article of faith (deserved or not) in the inerrancy of DNA is almost all cases. Once a case of DNA establishing innocence for an inmate put to death breaks, I think capital punishment will find itself on death row.
