Congress gets a schooling

Where Science and Public Policy Intersect, Researchers Offer a Short Lesson on Basics: “Congress took a science class last month, and some experts would like to make it a regular part of the curriculum.”

(Via NYT > Science.)

What an incredibly useful idea. It’s the kind of idea that makes you wonder why it isn’t done regularly already. Let’s face it, Congress is made up overwhelmingly of lawyers and professional politicians or community activists. The number of people who come from science backgrounds, outside of doctors, is very small. (Can anyone even think of one?)

Anyway, I’m all for it, especially if they can keep the focus on not focusing on any particular issues, but instead focus on increasing members general knowledge in an area so they can then use their own reasoning to form policy, rather than have to rely on policy to be written by interests groups in an area in which they have no expertise.
