Why it’s against self-interest for Big News to go after Google

February 4th, 2006

Newspapers argue that Google’s news service violates copyright law: “Copyright law interpretation sits at the center of yet another debate involving Google, as a newspaper association fires up a lobbying campaign to put some heat on the search giant.”

How dumb is this? It’s not a joke, so I’ll just tell you. How many times have you used Google news to get information on a breaking event? And how many times did that search on Google news lead you to a news site that you would have never in a million years visited otherwise? Google is driving traffic (and the money that can be generated from such traffic) to sites that wouldn’t otherwise see it, and the response is to sue them? Idiots.
