The point being, I think, that one day North Korea will have both missles and warheads that work, and hopefully by then our defense system will also work. Although I'm pretty liberal when it comes to the term "work" - if fifty missles are lobbed our way, and we knock down even one of them, then it will have been worth it. Because even one nuke can do a world of harm (to put it mildly).

Although, realpolitik-wise, I welcome an Asian arms race, if for the sake of Taiwan, alone. I think we should be willing to go to war to protect their independence, but I don't think we will, and they deserve a nuclear deterrent. And while North Korea will likely sell nukes to someone who we don't want to have one, I think that ship probably already sailed with the fall of the USSR.

WHY DO YOU HATE TAIWAN!?!

Fractals. That's the reason to have states operate as a microcosm of federal government. This isn't completely followed, though - what of monocameral legislatures? And moving a state - especially one such as CA - might mean others might move - and then the nation as a whole. Could happen (not likely).

The notion that federal government somehow keeps power from concetrating is a bit quaint. Those who advocated states rights when the Constitution was written would probably vomit themselves to death if they saw the "independence" states have today.

A lot of the concern comes from people who don't understand statistics and how they lie. When nationwide speeding limits were set Back In The Day, fatalities and such did go down. But that's probably to do with safer cars, seat belt laws, air bags, etc. But if you IGNORE ALL THAT, then sure, I guess statistics proves your point. Likewise, I don't know if it has gone UP since the laws were loosened, but if so, it might have as much to do with the relative UNsafety of SUVs - or maybe the success of MADD. Fewer drunk drivers = more road rage! Must be true! Statistics never lie!
